Thetis Island Getaway

******************
A couple weekends back now, myself and a few friends left Victoria on a sunny afternoon and drove to Chemainus. There we met up with our friend Reid who graciously boated us across the sea to his family cabin on Thetis Island for a weekend of fun. We arrived Friday afternoon and stayed through to Sunday. Our visit included, copious amounts of good food (catered by M&M) and good drinks, crazy hat dance parties, ice cream cones, sleep-ins and snuggles, swing races, a walk to the Sunday market, rowboat adventures, boat adventures and games. We laughed alot and thoroughly enjoyed the break from Victoria.

Let's Get Pickled!

**************

A little while ago we were introduced to an entirely new kind of pubcrawl - the pickle pub crawl. This type of pub crawl doesn't involve much land but rather you travel from pub to pub via harbour ferry all the while getting more and more pickled along the way. As it so happened, two birthdays fell on the same weekend and thus two different pickle boat outings were planned. The first was on a Saturday night - we started at about 6pm and enjoyed the last of the evening sun while cruising throughout the harbour on the boats. The second was on a Monday and we started at about 1pm thus enjoying the sunny summer afternoon. After visiting all the same places twice over I have come to the following conclusions: the Blue Crab is entirely worth skipping, the service at the Flying Otter is Phenomenal and the patio at Canoe Club might be the best one in town. Pickle boating in Victoria is a must.

Ripe For The Picking

*********************

Last week, Maddy, Teresa, Liz and myself piled into the car and made our way out to the farmlands of Central Saanich. The strawberries were ripe and just begging to be turned into jam. Together we picked 84lbs of strawberries, although costing a pretty penny, they were entirely worth it. We decided that for every berry put into the bucket, one went to our tummies - a fair trade in my opinion. We picked the berries on Wednesday and then on Friday went to work (after the hard part of washing, sorting and hulling  had been completed). Maddy's Mom (Liz) is the foremost expert on jam and she taught us everything we need to know about making the delicious spread! I'm not going to go into too much detail about the whole process as I believe it is something that you should learn by doing - BUT, I will tell you that for every 8 cups of berries we used just 1 cup of honey and thats IT. Doesn't get simpler or more delicious than that. Happy jam season everyone!

Lake Days

Last weekend, the gang and I spent a rather lazy Sunday up at Shawnigan Lake. We piled into Robb's truck, cranked the tunes and made our way up island. Robb, being the true blue he is, helped put my boat in the water and we spent the rest of the day zooming around the lake in it. We even got out the kneeboards... The hot tub is up and running and days at the lake are starting to feel a whole lot more summery.

Reflection

May came and went in the blink of an eye. It was truly a whirlwind month of happiness, laughter, a bit of sadness and a lot of studying. I finished a 24 day intensive history course at my University and celebrated by going to Sasquatch! with a bunch of my bestfriends. I successfully completed my May resolution and blogged atleast three times a week. Although it is no longer imperative that I maintain my tri-weekly blogging routine I am going to do my best to keep it up. Blogging is a really good creative outlet in which I can practice and improve upon my writing, document the happenings in my life and keep others up to date. My new resolution for the month of June is to abstain from bacon for the entire month, an imposing challenge considering my affinity for the delicious breakfast treat. Here goes nothing!

The best of the best.

On an Island in the Ocean

This past weekend was jam packed full of activities. Saturday I found myself wheeling a canoe down Maddy's residential street towards the beautiful blue ocean*. The sun was shining high in the sky and we had a twelve pack of coronas, a lime, a knife and a portable speaker. Life was good. We paddled out a ways, dropped a crab trap(which we still have yet to retrieve, rookie mistake) and settled ashore Jimmy Chicken Island. It was such an insanely gorgeous day out - we laid on the beach, drank some beers, watched & listened to the Oak Bay Tea Party from afar and worked on our tans. After returning to land a summer barbeque was in order and after filling ourselves to the brim we set out for a night on the town.

*I'd be lying if I said I did anything more than supervise Maddy and Robb's hard work.
